How To Treat a Child’s Sunburn

From the playground to the splash zone, kids need some serious sun defense! Even when SPF (Sun Protection Factor) has been applied, kids can turn into mini-lobsters in as little as 15 minutes. This summer, we want to arm parents with the know-how to handle a sun-kissed kid emergency!

Here are some key tips for treating a child’s sunburn:

1. Opt for cool to soothe the skin. Use cool water during showers or baths, and apply a cool compress when needed. Remember, avoid extreme temperatures; opt for gentle care for their delicate skin.

2. Stay Hydrated!  Keep the drinks flowing to prevent dehydration from the heat.

3. Tackle the Discomfort. Administer acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed – check our dosage chart to get it right for your child’s weight.

4. Keep Sunburned Areas Covered!  Protect the skin and keep those scorched spots under wraps to shield and heal the delicate skin.

To avoid the sunburn blues and need for these measures, seek out the shade, slather on sunscreen, and have those cool hats and shades at the ready for your little sun-chasers this season! For more on sunscreens, check out our guide to the Best Sunscreens for Kids and Babies.

*Remember, if your child is under 1 year old, or shows blisters, severe pain, sluggishness, or a temp above 101 degrees post-sunburn, don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician or take them to the urgent care.
