Safe & Spooktacular Trick-or-Treat Tips

Sweater weather and pumpkin-flavored everything is upon us. So is finding that perfect Halloween costume for trick-or-treating. While make-believe scares are the order of the season, real ones aren’t so fun for parents. Take some of the spooky danger out of the season with a little advanced planning and foresight for a spectacular night with these helpful tips:

  • Map Out the Night: You might not go trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, which sometimes lead to getting lost or not hitting your key spots. Plan your route in advance, to avoid confusion and makes for happy children.
  • Safety On and Off the Road: Accidents are avoidable if both parties are well informed on traffic rules and distractions are eliminated. Go over traffic rules with your children before trick-or-treating.
  • Adult Supervision: It’s recommended that children 12 years and younger go out with an adult. If you feel your child is mature enough to go without an adult keeping an eye on things, make sure he or she sticks to a group and familiar, well-lit areas.
  • Creative and Safe Costumes: You don’t need to risk your life to win costume contests! Choose non-toxic face paint instead of vision-tampering masks, correct clothing sizes that prevent falls, and soft and flexible accessories to keep kids safe this year.
  • Stay Well Lit: Choosing brightly colored outfits, sticking reflective tape on costumes, carrying a flashlight and wearing glow sticks as necklaces and bracelets keep trick-or-treaters visible to drivers.
  • Check All Candy: Do not forget to check your child’s candy before any is eaten. Throw away any candy not in original packaging, possibly opened or homemade. Have kids’ favorite treats ready to exchange for any treats you need to take away.

During this Halloween season, make sure to take all necessary precautions. However, if any injury or illness occurs, remember that Pediatric Urgent Care of Northern Colorado is available 365 days a year to help your kids return to their spooky, spectacular selves!
