Outdoor Spring Safety Tips for Kids

As spring rolls in, it’s the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities with your family. But before you head out, let’s talk about 4 crucial outdoor spring safety tips to ensure your kids have a safe and healthy experience.

1. Bug Spray

With the nicer weather, bugs are ready to come out and play. Whether you’re at the local park or hiking in the Rockies, bug spray is a must. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises using repellents with no more than 30% DEET and recommends avoiding insect repellent for children under 2 months. Always reapply after swimming to keep those pesky bites at bay!

2. Helmets

Springtime is ideal for biking, scootering, and rollerblading. Make sure your kids wear helmets properly to protect against serious injuries. Ensure that helmets fit correctly and replace any damaged ones for maximum safety.

3. Sun Protection

Don’t skip sunscreen just because it’s spring. The sun can still be harmful. Use sunscreen with at least 15 SPF and reapply every two hours. For infants under 6 months, aim for minimal sun exposure, keeping them in the shade and using lightweight clothing and hats.

4. Weather Preparedness

In Colorado, weather can be unpredictable. Dress your kids in layers to adapt to sudden weather changes. Remember, snowstorms can happen even in May!

By keeping these outdoor spring safety tips in mind, your family can enjoy all the joys of springtime activities.
